Two Geeks and Me

Three years ago I listened to a podcast called Two Geeks a Mic and a Podcast…
One of the strange things I remember about the episode I was listening to was how friendly the two hosts were. I would listen to the radio sometimes, and the hosts always seemed to be very crass and loud (I guess I picked up some of their bad habits…) but Scott and Ben were just…nice. They were quiet, good-natured and I felt like I was one of their buddies, listening and laughing at their conversation in the cafeteria or something. I never missed an episode of Two Geeks in the same way I never missed the chance to hang out a friend’s house.
So that was my relationship with Scott Carelli and Ben Noblitt, all the way up until the Spring of 2008. I was listening to the second episode of Geek By Night and it suddenly occoured to me that I could probablly do a good job writing scripts for the show. Why this idea didn’t come to me during the actual auditions for writing, who knows? But for some reason, I lacked the patience to simply wait for the next season. (It’sa good thing I didn’t though; a year later and I’d still be waiting for Season 2.) So I wrote this dumb little skit over Spring Break and emailed it to Scott, as my early audition piece. Scott sent me a friendly but unintrested reply and for a while, that was that.
Then John left.
Now, I feel like a piece of shit for admitting this, but the second I finished listening to the podcast where Scott, Randy and Ruzzo announced auditions for a new Elliot, I downloaded Audacity and sent for the audition piece. This was at the beginning of June. Then June turned into July and July turned into August and I had accpepted that maybe Geekshow just wasn’t in my future. Then, about two weeks before Junior year, Scott sent me an email, asking me to play Billy. I was on the team.
I think it was during one of our Skype table reads or something that I had my fist conversation with Scott. It was a bit jarring hearing the little voice in my headphones talking back, but as I wrote before, I already considered him to be something of a “friend” already. So when my good buddy Will Rithcie and I came up with the idea to do our own podcast, I felt comfortable asking Scott if it could have a home on Geekshow. Foolishly, he said yes.
Despite my presence on it, Geekeasy has become somewhat sucessful. We were the goofy little brother of Two Geeks and I felt right at home. Then, during one of our now-dialy Skype convos, Scott dropped a bombshell; He was killing the show. My brain sank. No If We Ran Hollywood? No Ben scolding Scott for saying “hey guys,” thus ignoring the female listeners? No Two Geeks? No way.
Without thinking and without consulting my loyal co-host, I told Scott, “hey, wouldn’t it be funny if Will and took over for you and Ben?” Scot replied the same way most of you did: “Uh, why?” Why indeed. I guess the most basic reason is that I love Two Geeks a Mic and a Podcast and I didnt want to see it die. If killing Geekeasy means Two Geeks will live so be it. Would it make a lot of listeners unhappy? Without a doubt. But hey, no one ever accused me of being a considerate guy. (Hey Kim.)
Which brings me to the reason I’m writing this. I want to let all the Two Geeks listeners know that me and Will are going to be 100% dedicated to you guys. It’s a big responcibility, and I know that a show like Two Geeks deserves a lot better than someone like me. But Will and I are going to do our best to make the best show possible. So please, if you’re still suscribed to the show, keep your suscription for at least two eps into our run. And if you don’t, hey, there’s always Fandamonium.
Anyhoozeles, if you’ve somehow managed to slog through all of this, thank you. And please, keep listening.

I love(d) geek easy, so I’ll be listening.
BTW will the episode with John ever see the light of day?
Um no, basically its been lost to time and weird hard drive issues. Weirdly enough, we just recorded an ep of Couch Surfing and Skype Call Recorder only picked up one half of our conversation. I think we’re cursed.
D’oh!
Well, I was going to send you my performance of Hamlet (in the original Klingon) but seeing you aren’t good with files, I’ll just hang on to that baby.
It’ll be good to hear your voices together again though.
Awesome article nick, btw love the new icon…Blue Beetle rocks
I thought that this was a well thought out and really nice artical. I really felt for it, and as reserved as I was about a show change, i’ll be listening with a warm welcome now.
Good luck with taking the helm guys.
I’m excited for you guys. I can’t wait to hear it. Are you going to change the music up? Anyways, i’m uber psyched
Scott seemed pretty adament about us keeping the Two Geeks theme, which sucks, becuase I was starting to grow fond of our own theme…maybe we could mash them both up somehow. That, or we could always use the Sailor Moon theme (REFERENCE!!)
I’d go with the Friends theme if I had the choice.
