New Site Features
Sunday, March 8th, 2009
Just a quick note to let you guys know of a couple new site features that we are trying out currently.Keep reading to find out more, then give us comments on them in the comments or the forums.
The first new feature can be found on the sidebar on the front page. It will list recent discussions happening on the forums. The second new feature is on the sidebar on the main page in a tab called “Unread Comments”, and on the sidebar in each individual post. It will list topics that have new comments that you haven’t read yet. This is determined by a cookie that is set on your computer, so if you use multiple computers, it may not be as useful to you. However, it’s a handy tool to see when posts get new discussions. Generally, if a post is not on the front page, it’s hard to keep up with it. However, this really helps with that problem.
Let me know what you think.

I like it. I was thinking that having a “subscribe” to this post type option, but this is good too.
I just thought that it would be great to get an email when someone replies to one of my articles or posts.
You can subscribe to the RSS feed of a post’s comments already. Not sure if there are readers out there that will email you when new activity arises or not, but that’s one option. Ultimately, I only have certain options available. I is not coder. :)
I like it, the front page isnt showing up on my computer though, only lists the shows, is this because of the updates?
The new features to the fourums make me want to use them more, so i might have to invest some time into them (I generally never use forums due to how hard it can be to keep up with conversations and whatnot).
I’ve been having this same problem at work. They’re running IE6. It’s like the articles 1/2 of the front page doesn’t exist. I also can’t access the wordpress blogging area either. I’m logged in, but it gives me an error when I click the ‘write’ button. ( IE cannot open http://…..) I just figured that my work was limiting even more than usual. Bah…I guess I don’t need to be blogging at work anyway… :)
Any idea’s to help fix it? This has happend befopre but it eventually worked itself out
I’ll look into it. Though I will say that there is no real way to support IE6 these days. It was a crippled browser 5-10 years ago. Now, it’s virtually impossible to make it work right. Still, it shouldn’t be missing major parts of the page. This started happening after the new features came in?
Is the problem fixed now?
Yes.
Up until yesterday it was still a problem, but now it looks fine.
Fantastic.
about a week to 10 days ago. I sent a picture to the group.
Latest forum posts are disabled for now, until I can figure out why the server has been running so high on CPU…
Too bad about ‘Unread Comments’ being saved in a local cookie and not on the site (I visit from both home and work). I’ll definitly give it a try though.
Thanks for your effort Randy!
Unfortunately, there aren’t many options out there. I wouldn’t think it would be too hard to make a version that stores the info server side. But it still taks some coding skills, of which I am without.
It’s not too bad in two places. You just catch up, and then scan the ones that you know you’ve already read when you switch locations. Still, it’s better if that wasn’t the case.
