Geek By Night season two premieres August 18, 2010!!
Hey Geeks, Scott here.
Yes, you read that right. No, this isn’t a really belated April Fool’s joke. Its actually happening. Geek By Night is back.
Really.
Why am I bringing it back now, so suddenly and after announcing it’s cancellation a few months ago? Well, that’s easy: I missed it. There hasn’t been a day that’s gone by that I haven’t thought about GBN in some way. I just couldn’t get these characters out of my head and it was really beginning to weigh down other projects I had been trying to work on. All I wanted to write was Geek By Night. That’s when I knew I had to bring it back. The show had a life of it’s own and it didn’t want to die. Who am I to ignore that?
But that’s only part of it. The real reason? All of you. The fans that refused to accept Geek by Night’s demise. Not a week has gone by since last year that I haven’t gotten at least one email either mentioning GBN in some way, or just flat out begging for it to return. It was overwhelmingly heartwarming and I couldn’t stand letting everyone down anymore. I could have eventually gotten over my post-GBN depression and just moved on, but none of you would let me.
From the bottom of my heart: THANK YOU.
But deciding to bring back the show is one thing, actually being able to do it is quite another. There were a lot of people involved with making Geek By Night the success it was, and if I wanted to repeat that, I needed them again. So I sent out a message just to ask if anyone was interested, assuming that most everyone would have moved on and been too busy to devote so much time to this little audio drama again. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. The response I received was overwhelmingly positive, with everyone ready to do whatever they could to bring Geek By Night back to full capacity. The troops were rallied and ready for war! (and by “war” I mean the production of a silly audio drama about geeks with super powers).
There was just one problem, and his name was Elliot Markowitz. I think that at this point I can pretty much assume that the character is cursed. Having lost Elliot #1 to show related drama, and Elliot #2 to real life drama, I hated the idea of having to cast the character again, but it was kind of a necessity seeing as Elliot is sort of the main character and all. But what if the curse just continued and Elliot had to keep being recast to the point that we’d reach the end of the series with our 7th Elliot? I don’t want that to happen. So in an effort to break the curse, maintain something resembling continuity going forward, and keep the show running smoothly I really only had one option: I’ll be playing Elliot. (Wow. I think I just heard a bunch of people collectively roll their eyes) It’s not ideal by any stretch, especially considering most of you have gotten so familiar with my voice over the years, but I know that I’ll be with the show to the end and at least this way we’ll never be forced to recast again.
So, no. It isn’t a dream. Geek By Night is really back. Season two will be 6 episodes, the first of which will premiere on Wednesday, August 18. We’ll follow the regular bi-weekly schedule we used to, with the Panel Discussions hosted by Brian Brown coming out on the off weeks.
And if season two is a success? Then maybe… Just maybe… We’ll do a season three.

Y The Last Man Vol. 5In this final Deluxe Edition hardcover collecting Y #49-60, Yorick and Agent 355 prepare for their ultimate quest to reunite the last man with his lost love, while the person, people or thing behind the disaster that wiped out half of humanity is revealed. Then, Yorick Brown's long journey through an Earth populated only by women comes to its dramatic, unexpected conclusion.
My life just got better. No lie!
OMG!!! Yes!! *Does the Snoopy dance*.. Ok.. breath.. breath.. This is awesome and I cannot wait!
Very good news, can’t wait.
What about the end of season 1?
Season two has basically become what was the end of season one. But I decided it had been way to long to try to convince anyone this was still the same season as the 10 episodes that came before.
Cool (had to ask, hehe)
Seriously, this news made my day.
Does this mean you’ll re-re-release season 1?
No, I already George Lucas-ed the first season enough. I’m just going to keep it as is and move forward.
Season 2 will consist of a polished, slightly tweaked version of the second half of season one. Episode 11 for example is being tweaked to be more in the style of a “season premiere.” We may re-realease season one but scott hasn’t said anything offcial to any of us.
Also, very excited about the Underdog gang getting back together. It’s been so long I forgot how to sign into the website!
@TotallyNotNick Now, if only the continuing misadventures of the Red Shirts would continue… Good to see you back on the site Nick.
@Hayden Jones it’s good to be back! Unfortuantely I can say pretty much defintively that Red Shirts is dead. The project just never came together which is a shame, but hey, the same goes for 90% of other podcasts out there. I can say that if you were a fan of the Red Shirts style of writing, I did of bit of work on some future Geek By Night scripts. Who knows how much Scott’s rewritten since then, but I’m sure it’ll turn out great regaurdless.
Rock on!! Best news all day!! Mindy the smart-ass returns!! And please inform Rachel Ruzzo that she has a very hot voice. I am super pumped. Can’t wait!
Oh yay! Looking forward to the rest. (Although I think you should have just given in and made Elliot a girl… I can think of at least 2 of your main cast members who would have enjoyed that… ;))
(I’m just going to double check my watch to make sure this isn’t April 1st… okay… checking… June 2nd…)
Holy Cow! That’s great to hear.
Holy made of awesome Batman!
I had to make sure my eyes weren’t deceiving me and double check to date just to make sure the announcement was made today and not an archive!
I am so pumped to have this show again. Not to get all mushy but GBN originally came out when I was working an absolutely horrid office job full of really jerky people who chattered inanely in between using me as a fail safe for blame with a light FM radio station in the background. But I would listen to GBN even if I’d already listened to the episode just to drown it all out.
So it’s wonderful to see you come back with this hopefully stronger than ever.
*Eagerly anticipating*
After seeing Scott’s tweets about potentially big news coming and the episode of Geekin Extra yesterday with the not so sly winking about GBN, I was just waiting for this post to show up. Very glad that GBN is coming back. Awesome news! :D
Happy early Birthday to me! My b-day is on the 23rd of August.
Tears of joy…literally! BEST NEWS OF 2010!!! Nothing will top this for me this year. NOTHING. August can’t come fast enough. And now I have the prefect excuse to relisten to the whole series and not feel slightly sad and nostalgic. Scott, you have made me the happiest geek gal in Oz!
Wow how’d I miss this? this is VERY exciting, I was extreamly supprised at how much I loved and missed this show. Looking foward to relistening to season 1 and hearing the new episode.
Im actually pretty excited to have an new Elliot, I loved John’s take, and I grew into Eliot 2, but it never really clicked for me, I think Scott will be perfect.
Thank’s Scott, you just brightened my day.
YAY! I CANNOT CONTAIN HOW HAPPY I AM THAT GEEK BY NIGHT IS COMING BACK!
After episode 10 came out I checked the feed every single day waiting for it to come out, but it never did. But now my depression has officially ended and I am very happy! Thank you Scott and GBN team for resurecting it.
In the words of the X-MAS special of invader zim,
‘My heart explodes with joy! *splat*’
ChronoFett– Thanks!! ;)
Right. *Slaps self in the face*. Ouch, I can now say I’m not hallucinating. Yay! Best news of the year!
Nobody has mentioned how excited they are to hear my new character…
Im excited to hear your new character.
Happy?
Wait… NEW CHARACTER?!?
I remember Scott posting a request for some upcoming characters. Maybe Jack got one of those. (I think it was for the next two episodes which is Chris O’Connor’s episode)
Ahh, yes. now I remember. Great to hear anyway, I AM SOO EXCITED!
That is great news. I missed the show a lot. I can honestly say there was nothing like it out there since the days of the radio drama. I am looking forward to it and glad I checked the message boards on a whim tonight.
Eeeee! This is such exciting news! Geek by Night is so unique, nothing in my audio drama line-up could hope to replace it. I’ll be counting down the days ’til the premier!
I am very excited for the return of Geek By Night.
Will season 2 be released on a new feed or will we be fine with the same feed that we are already subscribed to?
Same feed :)
will you post anything before August 18, 2010
like bloopers or something
Probably not.
well atless we are getting new Geek by nite . Thank you Scott for keeping the show going
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! OMG! i’ve been listening to geekshow podcasts for years now and never registered or emailed in or anything (sheepish grin) so that’s how excited i am!!! this news made me leave feedback!
This is awesome. I loved that show :-)
OMG! I was such a big fan of this when it was posting, since I found it through BBtL, and I was so disappointed when you canceled it. And I literally squealed when I read this on the front page. Checking the site randomly has just made my day =)
Did GBN get pushed back again?
Yes, unfortuantley we weren’t at a place in production where Scott was comfortable to begin relasing episodes. Scott’s very determined to not have any lapses or breaks once Season 2 starts and unfortantely that means pushing back the release date to September. I will say that from the scripts I’ve read, Season 2 will blow everything we did before out the water. it will defintely be worth the wait.
Ok so I’ve waited patiently all through August and now September but with only a week left till October I felt I had to ask where is season 2 of GBN? I’ve been refreshing the subscription every Wednesday since the 18th of August and nothing yet :(
(Anything I say here is mostly speculation based on a small amount of data, so take it with a metric ton of salt)
I wouldn’t expect anything for at least another month.
I think Scott tweeted that he had completed the first draft of episode five. (I think by that he meant episode five of the second season) That would mean there is one more script to go and then all the hard work of actually putting the thing together.
On the bright side, it sound like Nick has already written episodes for season #3
Given that Scott is working on Geekin, Geekin Extra, Movie NIght, Doctor’s Companion and other podcasts (like Sofadogs) not to mention watching the stuff to talk about, I’m a little surprised he has any time to work on GbN.
Maybe you could tweet, checking for Geek By Night… darn, nothing this week.
Not wanting to speak out of turn, I’ll just say that Scott was ready to start posting episodes, but a computer mishap occurred (that he had nothing to do with) and the completed audio was lost from his hard drive. Naturally, this set production back quite considerably. Rather than announce a release date and possibly jinx himself, Scott is just planning to post when things are done and back on track. So, check back on a weekly basis. I’m sure something will turn up, eventually. :)
