I can’t say that I was ever a huge fan of his books. In fact, I only ever got about halfway through Jurassic Park. This was after the movie, so the problem was that it was close enough to the film to leave me wishing I was watching the movie. I had often considered picking up one of his other novels, but had never found the time or motivation.
However, I still respect the original Jurassic Park as one of the big events in movie making history. Say what you will about the technology and special effects of the movie. However, it contained some of the greatest scenes I had ever seen up to that point. In addition, up to that point, I don’t think I had ever seen a Dinosaur pulled off anywhere close to as realistic as they were in the movie. Obviously, that’s not something that Crichton had a personal hand in, but it’s a memory that exists with me because of his work.
Cancer claims another person far too early. What a shame.
Crichton was also a director as well as the creator of the E.R. which is (somewhat fittingly now…) ending it’s 15 year run in May.
I’ve only read a few of his books (Jurassic Park, Lost World, and Sphere), but I enjoyed all of them a lot. He was a very talented author, and he will be missed.
Westworld is one of the best sci-fi cheeseball films ever made. For that I tip my hat and have a beer in his memory.
Its hard to know what to write, I’ve enjoyed his books over the years with Jurassic Park being my favorite. He will be missed
Jurassic Park is a fun read, and it has a ton of stuff that never made it into the movie. I also really like Sphere, Congo, and The Andromeda Strain. The old Andromeda Strain movie is pretty good, but the Hollywood adaptations of Congo and Sphere sucked. They completely missed the point of the books and what made them fun in the first place.
I haven’t read as much of Crichton’s recent books. I think Timeline was the last one I read, and it was okay.
He may not have been the best writer ever, but he did know how to make a fun story.
The guy was really brilliant. I still enjoy ER.
RIP
