Paterson Joseph is the new Doctor Who?!
Thursday, November 27th, 2008
Since his announcement last month, Doctor Who fans everywhere have all been asking the same question: Who will be getting the keys to the TARDIS when David Tennant steps down from the role next year?
Well according to numerous sites (such as here and here) not only has the BBC offered the role to an actor, but he has accepted. Keep reading…
The Eleventh Doctor will be Paterson Joseph.
It was revealed last month that Joseph was new showrunner Steven Moffat’s favorite choice for Tennant’s successor, coming as a surprise to no one due to the two working together on 2007’s Jekyll starring James Nesbitt. Doctor Who fans might know Joseph best as “Roderick” (Rose’s fellow contestant on The Weakest Link) in the episodes ‘Bad Wolf’ and ‘The Parting of Ways’ in season one.
Also revealed is that the Doctor isn’t going to be the only thing regenerating in 2010, the TARDIS console room will also be getting a redesign. This could, if true, facilitate the shooting of the show in high definition for the first time, something that the BBC and current showrunner Russell T Davies had held back on due to the amount of work that would need doing on the key sets.

Yes We Can
I figured this is who was going to get it…
I think he’ll make an awesome Doctor but then I’ve been saying that since I first saw him in Neverwhere
Do you believe in CHANGE? But seriously, this will be an interesting choice for the next doctor. Can’t wait
Somewhere out there, a racist Doctor Who fan is crying.

I’m really digging the black Doctor thing. And the racist dicks can shove it up their asses.
I’m really interested as to what kind of charecter Joeseph will create. Will it be a continuation of Tennant’s happy-go-lucky, geek-chic fun or pheraps a more brooding Doctor is on the horizon?
I’m totally hooked on the image that the past two doctors have instilled with me. Those characters happened to be my first two Doctors. So while I’m sad to see that similar image end, I’m very excited about what the change will mean for the show. Even if you take race out of the issue, this Doctor will have a different look to him. I really hope they take the chance to give him quite a few different personality quirks. But, if things are too different, we may see a few fans’ heads blow. :P
I’ve been pretty excited to see what they do with the new Companion too. This REALLY makes me hope that the new companion is around before the Doctor regenerates. The things they could do with that scene….
I’m not surprised- the BBC has always been really big on getting diversity. I think I’ve finally accepted Tennant leaving and I eagerly look forward to the newbie. :)
Once the Doctor goes black, he’ll never go back!…too cheesy? :/
Good choice as long as no sterotype black man stuff occurs. Meeting a new alien wirh ‘ give me five dude’ will not be accepted!
I wasn’t aware “give me five dude” was something only black people said.
I wasn’t aware it was something anyone said during the last 10-15 years. :P
Granted, this is a time traveling show. Maybe you should be more worried about people talking “Jive”.
‘give me a five dude’?
I think your mixing black people up with lame white people on commercials in the early 90’s.
That’s right up there with that HILARIOUS (*sarcasm*) bit that they always did on sitcoms back then with a confused old white dude going “wait… so bad means good?”
I think now lame white guy sitcom joke is the white kid (or dad) dressing all gangsta rap when he tries to look “cool.”
@TNN – Oh you mean ‘17 Again’? Yeah that was really lame…
I just started watching Dr Who, so it will be a while before I’m caught up with it. I’m currently about halfway through the 1st season. So by the time I catch up to the current episodes, you guys will probably have already seen many episodes with this new Doctor and have many opinions on how good he is. Right now I’m enjoying Christopher Eccleston, and I know that I like David Tennant since I’ve seen a few random episodes with him in it. I’m sure I will like Paterson Joseph as well.
Well in the next year there will only be four specials, you have plenty of time to catch up!
Be sure to pay special attention to the (wonderful) Steven Moffat episodes as you go through, Polygon. His episodes so far have been amongst the best. And since he’s the new show runner, that’s fantastic.
Hmm, I really didn’t like him in Jekyll… this could go well
I just finished watching the WWII episodes that Moffat did, “Empty Child” and “The Doctor Dances”, and I think they are my favorite episodes so far.
As they should be. He quite a few other good episodes too though. I really like “The Girl in the Fireplace” and I believe that “Blink” may be not only one of my favorite Doctor Who episodes, but also one of my favorite television episodes of any series.
The Library episodes from the 2nd season were good too, but I think I enjoy all the other ones from him the best.
I think this just brings diversity into show. Just like when they brought Martha Jones as a companion. And because the Doctor is going be black,it’s different, yeah. But It’ll be kind of cool to see.
I bet all you people who had convinced yourselves (with little in the way of evidence) that PJ was definitly #11 feel like complete idiots now! Let this be a lesson to all, the internet lies to you :P
diversity, smiversity. Who needs it. Doctor Who is an Englisgman. Englishmen are cultiral;ly, genetically and historically Caucasian. So should it be with Doctor Who. This is stupid. Why do we have to tweak everything in the name of diversity? I’ll give this guy a chance, but it won’t be the same. Some things are better left alone.
longtime US fan.
I don’t want to be picky (who am I kidding I love being picky) Englishman! Even if you ignore the whole he’s from Gallifrey thing. What about Sylvester McCoy? Everything about his Doctor was Scottish.
