G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. Who Saw It? Who Liked It?
Sunday, August 9th, 2009
The summer blockbuster based on the 80’s toy commercials (Oh I’m sorry, “television show.”) came out this past weekend. Thoughts?
Personally, I had a lot of fun with G.I. Joe; a LOT more than I thought I would. I think this is Stephen Sommers’s best movie since The Mummy and it’s leaps and bounds above Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Scott Pilgrim Vol. 1-6From writer/artist Bryan Lee O'Malley comes the story of Scott Pilgrim, the 23 year old slacker who's precious little life is turned upside down when he meets the girl of his dreams (literally), Ramona Flowers, and discovers that in order to be with her, he must fight and destroy her seven evil ex boyfriends. As a GI Joe fan I have to say it was much better than I expected. I’m glad they changed the backstory for most of the characters, and there were lots of little things from the show like Scarlet’s Crossbow that they kept in which was great.
I’ve been looking forward to this film since they announced Lee Byeong-Heon was playing StormShadow. He is one of the best Korean actors (seriously if anyone gets the chance check out ‘A Bittersweet Life’) and this was his first American film AND he played my favorite character……so I was happy.
Was I the only one who had to wonder why they didnt just make the whole movie CG? the scene’s with scarlett on the bike in traffic reminded me the parts in Ratatouille on the scooter.
Did anybody else guess every single twist a mile before it happend?
I still liked Lee Byeong-Heon as stormshadow (yes a bittersweet life was awesome), but alot of the acting from most of the other cast seemed phoned in to me.
All in all I can see why alot of people will hate it and why some will like it. I myself think it could of been alot better, but it gave me thingthing to do for an hour and 1/2.
I skipped GI Joe this weekend to see 500 Days of Summer instead, partly because I really wanted to see that movie and partly because I doubt it will hang around here for more than a week or two. GI Joe will be here for quite a while, so I’ll have plenty more chances to see it.
Just like it tells you from the beginning, 500 Days of Summer isn’t a “love story” as you might expect from the commercials. I enjoyed it quite a bit, especially Joseph Gordon Levitt’s performance.
I’d like to think that 500 Days of Summer is an unoffical origin story to Levitt’s charecter in GI Joe
Perhaps it should be given a revised title then. Something like 500 Days of Summer: Or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned To Become A Supervillain perhaps?
Perhaps.
*ahem*
Okay, I think I’ve got them all out now.
This movie looks cool but also looks nothing like the toys from the 90’s
I’m one of the rare people who thought this was a killer movie. Not only did it keep the action/adventure intense and gripping, the acting and characters were likable, enjoyable and understandable. The story never drug out, and wasn’t crazy or full of huge plot holes. The story was twisty enough to keep me guessing, but not so that it would turn off the general audience.
And the visuals were impressive.
I really enjoyed it too Tabz.
Although I’m old enough to remember the toys from the ’80’s.
I too, enjoyed it. It was mostly action and special effects, but really, thats what we want to see right? I thought it was worth the cost of admission, which is all you can ask for these days.
This movie was horrible. If you want to see a perfect G.I. Joe film watch the film “G.I. Joe: Resolute” and I dare you to say that “Rise of Cobra” was better. You can see it on Youtube and i think it’s on DVD. Once again they turned a great series to a comedy. It was great to see Michael Jackson’s last film performance and Addabesee from OZ with an english accent dressed as Blade with a Sinbad/Mr. T earring. Does the guy who was playing Duke have the ability to show facial expression at all? They should have used CG on his face.
The logic in the film was terrible.
Example 1 if you have a ninja on your team who doesn’t speak, why put lips on his mask?
Example 2 if you’re a highly trained team that is the best of the best around the world how do you get arrested by the french police?
Example 3 when your base is highly classified with the best Tech on the planet, how can that base get breached with 2 guards on duty with no sound of alarm until the chief of the operation sounds the alarm after getting his chest slashed?
Example 4 if your job with G.I. Joe is to protect the lives of people why would you go on a car chase jumping on a motorcycle in the middle of traffic causing crashes then slowing a jeep down long enough to get get by a moving train filled with innocent people then going through that train to have shattering glass hitting innocent people (watch the chase seen in france and count how many people were injured or killed by the hands of G.I. Joe)?
Example 5 If someone slashes a sword across your chest, would it make any sense at all to see you the next day walking with a cane or in a wheelchair??????
If you haven’t seen “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” don’t see it instead watch “G.I. Joe: Resolute”
