Drop Dead for a brand new Fred
Saturday, May 9th, 2009
Universal Studios is set to remake the cult classic film Drop Dead Fred according to HollywoodReporter.com.
The new film will be written by Dennis McNicholas (Land of the Lost) and produced by Marc Platt (Mark Platt Prods.), Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner (Working Title).
The actor who is reportedly going to don the green suit as the new Fred is Russell Brand (of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Bedtime Stories) in what is hoped to be a starring vehicle for the British comedian.
Time will tell if his interpretation of the role will be as popular with fans as Rik Mayall’s was in the 1991 original film. No word as yet as to who will take up the role of his female counterpart, first played by Phoebe Cates.

ENOUGH! Enough with all the remakes! Hollywood is losing their creativity. The only thing they can come up with are remakes and reality shows. Every month there’s a new reality show. They’re already going to do remakes of “Karate Kid”, “Never Ending Story”, “Predator”, “Halloween”, and “Nightmare on Elm street”. Those films are great just the way they were. If they’re going to do something with those films why don’t they do either a prequel or more sequels to them? Sorry to be so angry I can’t help it. Every time I read or hear of another remake of a great film I grew up watching a bit of my childhood dies on the inside.
I also heard that George Lucas is going to do remakes of episodes IV through VI so that it will go along with the Star Wars prequels. Someone please confirm that it is just a rumor and not fact.
I seriously hope that the Star ar thing is just a rumour. Pleeease. I’d still go and see them just out of curiosity, just like the terrible Star Wars: Clone Wars but still…they are fine the way they are.
As for Drop Dead Fred. I loooove that film when I was younger and then thought “Noooo” when I saw here that they were re-making it. Then I saw that Russell Brand is playing Fred and now I’m all for it. His personality first Fred’s to perfection. I think this could be a good thing. Just my opinion though… :)
I dont think it’s exactly the kind of movie that needs remade… its not like its in need of big specail effects, it still holds up fine.
Knowing today’s Hollywood, it’ll have so much sfx that they’ll try to make it like Jim Carrey’s “The Mask” to sell toys and probably video games.
Look, remakes aren’t going away, so bitching about them will only cause bitterness. Second, I think it’s better to remake an obscure, maybe less-than fantastic film that had a great concept, then a film that was executed perfectly the first time.
I think Brand’s a great comic presence and I’m going to wait for a trailer before I condem this operation
Since we’re on the kick of remaking old movies, let’s see a remake of Mac & Me.
Wow.. I haven’t heard that title in so long..
I try to think about it everyday…
As with all remakes its just about money. The original only made like 8 million in the theater, they’ll milk this one for a lot more.
I have to say, if they are going to make a new version of the movie I’m glad they waited until they had someone like Brand to play it, because he is perfect for the role.
I have to say that I too was really reluctant when I heard this news. I really loved the movie when I was a kid and find it even better now that I can actually understand a little more what’s actually going on.
As for Russell Brand, I think he might be good in the role. I haven’t seen a great deal of his stuff so can’t comment too much on him. But I think if they take the essence of what the original was trying to do and don’t go too Hollywood then it could be a good movie.
Question: do kids still have imaginary friends these days? We live in such a technological world where access to stuff is the given and well, have we lost a bit of the innocence where kids can express their imaginations as creatively as all that anymore? Maybe a new movie would be good as a way of putting the idea out there for kids to use their imaginations a little more. Just a thought.
As TNN has said, remakes aren’t going anywhere and are becoming a lot more commonplace in the entertainment arena these days. People are either gonna love them or hate them. There will always be contention cuz you can’t please everyone. Still it is always good discussion if nothing else. As for me, I think I’ll wait for more solid info and a trailer for this project before forming a more solid opinion. Who knows? It might be fun to have another adventure with Fred.
