“Buffy: Animated’ What Could Have Been…
Sunday, August 3rd, 2008
A four minute pilot presentation for the (very) short-lived Buffy Animated Series, produced by Joss Whedon and Jeph Loeb, has hit the internets. It even features all of the original cast voices! Well… except for Sarah Michelle Gellar of course who was quoted in saying that she had no interest in the animated series because she was "afraid that Buffy has jumped the shark". In her place was Giselle Loren who played Buffy in the two Buffy video games, Buffy (Xbox) and Chaos Bleeds.

Then, Yorick Brown's long journey through an Earth populated only by women comes to its dramatic, unexpected conclusion.
Hmmm…not bad. That girl sounded a LOT like SMG. I kind of got a fantasy Kim Possible vibe, but with better dialog.
Nice, but a dragon? SMG may have been right about the shark thing.
Best line: “The harder they what?”
angel had a dragon…
but yeah, i agree with you and her
That looked amazing. I want to see more!
I don’t agree about jumping the shark at all. It’s an animated series. A Cartoon. It was made for a different audience. What’s wrong with a dragon?
My biggest problem is that it seemed like it was on fast forward. The dialogue was hard to keep up with and digest at times. But I imagine that was so they could pitch it in as short a time as possible.
Okay so let me get this straight: a giant snake is okay but…. a dragon is considered “jumping the shark”? You guys are crazy… lol
Actually the new phrase is “nuking the fridge.” Thanks Crystal Skull…
tnn-lol i thought about saying that but i was waiting for someone else to..
good
wayne-good point about audience, even with the dragon i still wish it was happening.
random, and off topic, but if there are any supernatual fans:
i liked the first season enough to watch all the way but my local library won’t buy season two… is there enough of an improvement (not that s1 was bad) that you would recemend buying s2?
sorry for going off topic, but it the words of randy: hoo rah buffy!
LOL, funny I can see why it wasn’t picked up. But I would have watched anyway.
@angelangelus: S2 is where the show hits its stride. I consider the finale of Season 2 to be some of the finest 2 hours of television ever. It is a MUST BUY (but if you want to get it cheap you can always wait for Season 3 to come out, usually the predated seasons go on sale that week :) )
Oh wow… I’ve been wondering how long it would take to leak out like this. I remember this being announced YEARS ago and then… nothing. It just done gone disappeared. It was not nearly as bad as I always thought it would have been. And the animation was actually not that cheap looking. Looked cute and fun. I heard the reason it got canned was because the network didn’t know what to do with it: too adult for little kids, but too “kid-ish” for teenagers. And other than the Simpsons I don’t recall a huge load of cartoons not meant for kids at the time.
I wonder if they managed to finish a whole episode. I’d love to see Angel and Dawn animated. :)
I think it would find an audience today. But I’m not losing sleep over it not existing.
It reminds of that period in the late 90’s where every sucessfull movie got an animated series: Men In Black, Godzilla, Dumb and Dumber, BeetleJuicee….
Ah yes TNN I remember those days. I remember they gave The Mummy a (very bad) show too. And also, they would do that, and then change, like, really big things from the movie. Like Beetlejuice and Winona Ryder’s character were now bff.
I remember the Punky Brewster cartoon as well. And Sabrina the Teenage With (I’m not ashamed to admit it, I loved that show when it was on TGIF) But that was different- the cartoon was more like the Archie cartoon.
TNN, Sunshine- I remember those days as well, especially when all the cartoon these days are really not great (pinata, anybody?). And Sunshine I also liked Sabrina on T.G.I.F. and the cartoon as well, but I only caught Sabrina and not the Archie ones( btw Sabrina was a spin-off from the Archie Comics, I even remember the 1st comics w/ Melissa Joan Heart on the cover), but at ease We can dwell on the past when the present isn’t what we want it to be.
Ahhh, the Bettlejuice cartoon. Loved it! No, like, seriously. It is my preferred juice of the beetle entertainment method. Of course, the movie and me weren’t on very good speaking terms as a kid. I won’t say that it scared me, because it didn’t. However, I spent the night with a friend once when there was an all night marathon of Bettlejuice running on his TV. We slept in the room adjacent to said TV, and got hyped up on sweet tea prior to bed that night. So basically I had these weird half-dreams of Beetlejuice all night long.
Since then, I’ve never enjoyed the movie quite as much. And I’ve never forgiven sweet tea. To this day, I still can’t stand it. True story.
Cartoons are sort of at their worst right now I think. Other than Spectacular Spider-Man (which is fantastic for anyone not watching btw), cartoons aimed at kids are at such an overall low quality that it makes me a little depressed. Of course, this generation of kids are a lot different, what with all the American anime style shows and the shows that seem to make little to no sense to me at all (I’m convinced those shows are actually hypnotizing our youth into liking it…). I long for the days when quality cartoons were the norm.
But taking this back to Buffy, I think that the Mutant Enemy crew would be rolling in the dough if they started releasing animated direct to DVD films that continue Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. I mean, I know there are the comics, but they’re all of varying quality and I’m sure there are still people too stubborn to buy a comic book. But an animated film? I mean just look at the Marvel/DC stuff, those are selling like crazy. I really think it would be a viable option. Plus you’d get most of the voices back (I’m assuming all but SMG…) and fans would be happy! I know I would be at least…
2: “Actually the new phrase is “nuking the fridge.” Thanks Crystal Skull…”
If something is just extremely bad, perhaps we should come up with a hybrid phrase. Something like “nuking the shark in the fridge”, “jumping the fridge over the nuclear shark”, or maybe just “nuking the shark”. ;)
“Hitting the shark with a fridge, then just to be an ass, nuking the whole damn ocean.”
This makes me sad.
Why you ask? Because this could have been awesome. And Giselle Loren works just as well as Buffy as any. At least vocally.
thanks scott, its on sale for $20 so ill pick it up.
Even though it looks like you’ve already decided to get it, I just wanted to say that the second season of Supernatural is totally worth it. I think the second season is my favorite so far, and ton of cool stuff happens throughout that season.
Netflix just sent me the first disc of the first season and I just watched it (of Supernatural I mean) I actually like it pretty well thus far, but I am now fully looking forward to season 2 if it’s apparently even better. :)
I was gonna post this (video) but didn’t know how, lol. Someone from another msg board sent it to me.
I liked it, and wish it’d been made into a series. I wonder if the VO for Buffy was the same VO person as the video game?
My favorite line, “we’ll find the followers of Morgan Freeman”
@angelangelus: I just bought season 2 of Supernatural on Amazon, only 22$. I’ don’t even have S1 yet (Netflixing it); I’m waiting for a price drop to buy it.
@TheDoctor: and especially now that Avatar is over (I’m guessing), Spectacular Spider-man does seem like the only decent animated show out there (not counting the prime-time stuff like South Par, Family Guy etc)
Oops, I meant to add. I’m also just finished disc 1 of Supernatural and that enough to convince me that it was a really good show. :)
@Pointy, judging by your question about the Buffy VO actress, I’m assuming you didn’t actually read the article? LOL
I can’t read! Okay!
LOL
Of course since i didn’t read it, and though tit was her, that does mean I’m pretty sharp. :)
uh… heroes discussion tonight??
IUTB- yeah talkshoe says the show starts in like 20 minutes
It MIGHT have been cool, but who wrote the lines for this? Xander’s were the only ones true to his character. Giles’ and Willow’s lines were pretty awful. The non SMG Buffy does sound a lot like her, but her delivery is so bad. It’s like she saw how SMG delivered the lines and then did her worst impression of it. I don’t know what market they were trying to reach with this. Kids? Teens? Was this going to be on kids WB?
And in reference to cartoons today being bad, clearly you guys don’t watch The Venture Brothers.
I am no sure how I feel about it. I would have to watch more of it to see.
@xxangelangelus, I have both season 1 and 2 and I love both of them. I actually liked season one better though. Maybe, I am not really sure. Of one my favorite episodes is Skin from season one. I love that episode and what it does for the plot. Also when Filter starts playing it just rocks. But one of the best/funniest episodes is in season 2. Make sure you have the “Previously On Supernatural” on when watching Tall Tales. When it originally aired I almost fell of the couch LMAO! There are so many other great episodes from season 2 as well. I might just break my S2 out. If I have time, thanks to Polygon_Wizard all I have watched lately is Farscape, lol.
Is it just me or did Giles first lines sound russian?
ill agree, it seems he has a russian accent on the word ‘good’
i agree with you randy, i only watched up till giles’s first line, but i felt there should have been more spacing between buffy’s taunts in the opening scene.
Buffy the Animated Series possibly back on? MTV news blog has an article about it. There is now a petition to get it on the air. Has this already been brought up somewhere and I missed it?
