Aussie Slayerette – Introductions

Introducing Geekshow Entertainment’s newest op-ed writer, Hayley White.
Aussie Slayerette
To Make or Remake?
Hey there all! I’m a geek gal from Sydney Australia who watches way too many DVDs in her spare time than she should. Scratch that. I buy too many DVDs than I really should. My collection has been getting to ridiculous proportions ever since I got a DVD drive for my computer a few years ago, but I just can’t help myself. Between the fact that I currently work next door to a DVD store and those two wonderful little words, “Special Features”, I am completely hopeless when it comes to holding myself back from buying more DVDs.
Another thing that is quite ridiculous in size is my book collection – filled largely by novelizations of all my favorite television shows like Buffy and Angel and Roswell. The root cause of this is that I worked in a bookstore for seven years, right during the Whedon television prime, and I got a great employee discount. So between these two collections I really have no end to all the geeky things I am a fan of and dedicate my spare time to enjoying.
As my screen name suggests and as you may have already gleaned from this introduction, I am a big fan of all things Joss, in particular Buffy. I also enjoy Supernatural, NCIS, Charmed, Roswell, Lost, as well any incarnation of the Stargate universe. Next on my hit list is getting back into Bones and Heroes on DVD after I missed many of the television screenings over here and checking out if Smallville is worth the watch. As for features, my favorite movie is Serenity.
Since I was a kid I’ve wanted to be a writer. I’ve attempted a few novels in the past, which I continue to work on from time to time, and my dream jobs are novelist or screenwriter for a sci-fi television show. I tend to favor the creative side of things more so than the factual side but in recent times I have really found a love of reviewing. I even created a small reviews blog called “What I’ve Been Watching” for anyone who’s interested in reading my thoughts on my latest visual conquests.
Between my love of books, movies and television I always struggle when a story from one medium gets transferred to another as to which one is better and/or more valid. I tend to favor the original incarnation of something as sacrosanct but there are always the exceptions to the rule. Each week I’m going to be posing the question, “To Make or Remake?” to some of the best and worst creations in the entertainment world and weighing up which recreations are good, which ones are great, and which ones should really have been left alone in the first place.
Join me as I go back and forth across entertainment time and space, venturing through the wormhole of the remake world and delving into some of geek culture’s best and worst moments of creativity.

Welcome, AussieSlayerette!
Did you like it when Ben Browder and Claudia Black joined the cast of Stargate SG-1? If so, you should definitely check them out in Farscape, unless you’ve already seen it.
The show was made in Australia, giving it a distinct flavor different from other sci-fi shows. The heavy involvement of the Henson Studios also helped to make the show special. It has a great cast and a great story, and I will continue to refer to it on this site and others as “Buffy in Space”. I posted a fairly long comparison of the shows on the old forums here, so check it out if you can find it.
I think I will continue to pimp the show until more people start watching it. I think a lot of you guys would enjoy it.
I second Farscape, it’s a much better show that most people realize and I would recommend it to anyone.
I look forward to your discussions on “To Make or Remake?”. It’s a question I ask myself whenever I watch remakes and it would be good to debate it.
Welcome to the site!
Yes, Farscape is one of those rare gems, even though it was made over here in Australia, it got the worst time slots. Im not even sure the last season was broadcast here or not, well it wasn’t in Melbourne anyway, thank god for DVD.
Look forwad to reading your opinions.
Considering the passioned views on both sides of the current “re-make mania,” I can’t wait to see what you have to say!
Farscape is frelling awesome! I also recommend!
Well done Slaayerette!! Love the article, nicely written and I look forward to reading more of your stuff.
Welcome to Geekshow, I can’t wait to read your articles every week!
Welcome Slayerette!
I’ve always held to the belief that they should remake movies that had a good idea- but crappy execution instead of remaking good movies all around.
Can’t wait to read your articles.
Also, I’m on the Farscape train as well ever since I caught it randomly on sci-fi years back. I’ve tried to get friends who would like it to watch it but they all get so put off by the Henson Creature Shop, whilst I hold as that’s what gave it its distinct flavor. I should really pick up that comic that my friend told me is ‘in canon’ and takes place after the tv movie…
Looks like I need to try out Farscape…
I was always under the assumption that it was really similar to B5 (which I hate…), but if its as good as you all say it is I might just give it a shot.
I could use a new Sci-fi show to watch anyway…
Trust me, well worth it!
I wonder where you got that impression. Farscape and Babylon 5 share almost nothing in common other than they are both science fiction. Farscape has more similarities with a show like Buffy or Angel, especially in how it builds a family dynamic between its characters.
Oh yeah! I also wanted to mention that I think Farscape had some of the best/most infuriating cliffhanger endings of any show I’ve seen. Of course, they wouldn’t be nearly as impactful on DVD since you know you can watch the next episode whenever you want.
Thank you everyone for your warm welcome! I guess I should address Farscape since its on people’s minds. :-) No, sadly I haven’t seen it yet tho it is def one of those I wanna see at some point. I always go to buy the first season on DVD but then put it back. I actually thought I might hire it today after all your comments but alas the store didn’t have it in :-(. But Buffy in Space? Hmmm I am now greatly intrigued, thanks Polygon! :-)
In terms of when Ben Browder and Claudia Black joined the cast of SG1 it didn’t really effect my viewing in an adverse way, knowing that they were already really popular from another show. I think because Stargate has a great way of not taking itself too seriously and is really hyper-aware of things so that was really good. The incident of Vala claiming that Earth had a limited gene pool and then the whole 200th episode spoof thing being prime examples. Classic!
Hope you guys like my analyses.
You need to find it. The first time I watched Farscape it was somewhere in the middle of chaos (usual for Farscape) and I was lost. I will admit I was put off by the “muppets” at first as well. Later on from the urging of Polygon_Wizard I gave it another shot. This time from the beginning. I found it slow to start, but by the end of the first season I was glad I gave it another shot.
As a Stargate fan, after seeing Farscape I am a bit disappointed in Ben and Claudia in SG-1. Not that it is their fault in any way. Their potential was tapped much more by the writers and directors of Farscape, IMO.
You’ll have to let us know what you think when you watch it.
Hmmm seems like I will definitely need to get my hands on it at some stage. The muppets don’t really turn me off cuz I am a huge muppet fan so that is actually an exciting part for me.
Next time I see it I will have to snatch it up on DVD.
Welcome, fellow NCIS fan.
Welcome AussieSlayerette! Wow, it seems you are my double. We like almost all the same things. The only thing you’ve mentioned I do not love is NCIS. I am a special feature freak! I have all of the Buffy, Angel, Roswell, Charmed, Supernatural, SG-1, and Atlantis boxed sets. I am a book nerd, but have only read a couple Buffy/Angel books.
I can’t wait to read what you write! :D
