I don’t remember the last time the temperature was below 90 here in New York. It’s all we can do to keep from melting in this heat, so we’ve decided that after the fun we had last week, we’re doing grab-bag shows through Labor Day! Unless something amazing happens that calls for some in-depth Geek analysis, we’re talking about everything and anything – see this week’s grab bag after the jump.

  • We respond to some comments on previous episodes that we didn’t have a chance to address on the site.
  • A detour into Angela’s deprived childhood regarding the Smurfs
  • Billy rants about how Rotten Tomatoes has ruined movie viewing
  • We saw William Shatner’s new documentary The Captains this weekend. Wow, what a train wreck.
  • And we finally got to play Hollow Earth Expeditions, the new-to-us RPG we picked up at Origins in June. We review the game, from the point of view of both player and Game Master.

Hope you all enjoy our grab-bag format as much as we have! If you have any suggestions for other grab-bag topics, or other comments, leave a comment here at Geekshow or…

This week on a Couple of Geeks we talk about how we celebrated – spoiler alert, it was filled with geekiness!

  • We spent time with friends playing a variety of tabletop games – a deck building game, a card game, and an inventive board game
  • We both managed to get into Google+! What’s working so far on the service, and what’s missing
  • There’s news on the superhero movie sequel front, and we look ahead at some of the summer movies we’re still waiting for
  • And a random look at geeky Twitter accounts – and a call to listeners to tell us about more

And our topic of the week celebrates the release of four of the five Star Trek series onto Netflix Instant streaming, at least for US users. We’ve spent the weekend re-watching some of our favorite episodes, and dedicate our topic of the week to examining every Star Trek series, from the maligned Enterprise to the little-seen Animated Series, and the big hitters in between.

Lots of random discussion this week, as we riff off of last week’s unexpected hot topic of geeky guilty pleasures as well as our geeky comforts – or “binkies” as Billy insists on calling them. Full topic list after the jump.

  • Billy is still on his anime kick, with three very different anime recommendations
  • A brief detour into geek fantasy jobs
  • And then we’re even further off track, imagining the ultimate cheesy SyFy movie of the week monster
  • There’s a Youtube interview with the girl who joined Darth Vader in Disney Land
  • A script has been finished for Bill & Ted 3! Who saw that one coming?

Last week there was a bit of an uproar in the comments about whether or not Supernatural should count as a guilty pleasure, which inspired us to think even more about what we consider to be our guilty pleasures, and what are those geeky things that we cling to unapologetically when the going gets tough. From MMOs to reality TV to beloved books, tune in to hear our thoughts, and feel free to send us your own, here in the comments or at CoupleOfGeeks@Geekshow.Us!

Keep reading for the full list of topics.

  • Angela has spent a ton of time recently re-living her tweenage year, reading the re-release of the Animorphs books and re-watching old episodes of Gargoyles. Who else remembers these?
  • Billy has been on an anime kick. He liked Shuffle! – but tune in to hear the one he’s wild about.
  • Supernatural is back on the air for the last half of its sixth season. We don’t get into it too terribly much, but this is definitely Angela’s guilty pleasure TV show

And the big topic of the week: geek heroes! The real life people that make geek culture possible, influence geek culture, or serve as inspiration to geeks everywhere. Scientists, actors, artists and TV pioneers all make our list. Who are some of yours?

Who’d have thought we’d make it this far? This week we spend a lot of time geeking out about role playing games and movies, before getting philosophical about defining what is geeky. See the full list after the jump.

  • Issue 20 of Billy’s favorite MMO, City of Heroes, has been released!
  • On Saturday, Angela got to GM an RPG of her own for the first time – hacking the Cortex system’s Supernatural game to fit a steampunk theme. We discuss the game here, and on Friday you can listen to the podcast of the first installment at Fandible.Com
  • We took Polygon_Wizard’s suggestion from last week and saw Source Code this weekend. We give a spoiler free review (spoiler for the review: we really liked it!)

And then inspired by some of the conversation about Moulin Rouge in the comments last week, we discuss how to define what is geeky before wandering off on a little bit of a gender studies tangent about women and geek and why so often the two are seen as mutually exclusive.

Our main topic this week was totally inspired by feedback from the comments last time, so please keep them coming! We’ve also solved our e-mail woes at last and can definitely be reached at coupleofgeeks@geekshow.us. Comment or e-mail us your feedback or suggestions for future topics!

Upcoming movies, older movies, favorites and least favorites, we discuss them all – check out the highlights after the jump.

  • It’s pretty much a universally accepted truth that Pixar makes some of the greatest movies of our time – we spend a lot of time talking about some of Pixar’s greatest moments, while we simultaneously dread their next contribution: Cars 2.
  • Speaking of Cars 2, did you know that 2011 will have the highest number of sequels ever? 27 movies are coming out this year that are part of a continuing series – from direct sequels like Cars 2 and The Hangover 2 all the way up to the 8th installment of the Harry Potter series.
  • Lots of that movie conversation in the comments last week was about Sucker Punch – we spend a little time talking about why we haven’t seen it and probably won’t until we can Netflix it.
  • Movies that shouldn’t exist: Smurfs. Mr. Popper’s Penguins.
  • Horror movies are awesome and at the same time easily scare the crap out of us. Paranormal Activity and The Grudge are among those. And while it was a little more funny than scary, Billy loved Drag Me To Hell. Angela has only read the theory that Drag Me To Hell is actually about bulimia.
  • In response to kalindidur’s questions about some introductory geek movies, Billy makes fun of Angela’s suggestions. She maintains that she’s right, Billy just isn’t sophisticated enough to see it. We get in a lot of variety, from classic Disney to horror films to Oscar-nominated science fiction…to chick flicks. Seriously, give them a chance!!!

So we get a little silly as we talk about our theme of Women in Geek Culture, as we close out women’s history month 2011. More below the fold!

  • To follow up on a big topic in our sex podcast, we look at the “Straight Male Gamer” who complained about his privilege to Bioware, and was smacked down for it
  • Billy discovered DeviantArt this week. Next he’ll be asking for cheezburgers (Speaking of internet flashbacks, private to Kalin Didur: got your e-mail. We lol’ed.)
  • A belated take on Rebecca Black and “Friday”
  • Homophobia in a young adult anthology, and the inspiring response

Normally I’m not big on celebrating the various “diversity history” months, since I strongly believe the achievements of women and other disadvantaged groups should be recognized year round. But I figure I’ve got my feminist cred pretty established around here, so to finish off Women’s History Month, Billy and I fangirl/boy over our favorite female geek figures (and there are some hilarious brainfarts in this part as Billy’s sleepless night catches up with him!)

We’ve been having some trouble accessing our geekshow.us e-mail, so if you want to chime in on this week’s topic, leave us a comment here! We promise to be slightly more serious and “with it” next week, and would love your input on what we should talk about next!

For slightly less geeky talk, check out our other topics after the jump.

  • We spend far more time than is probably healthy dissecting the 3/18 episode of Glee – so spoiler warning if it’s taking you more than a week to catch up!
  • Casting news – following up on last week’s Hunger Games discussion, along with some thoughts on those Batman rumors for Joseph Gordon-Levitt
  • It wasn’t on our agenda, but the release of a new trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean 4 got me on a tangent.

And then the big topic: tabletop roleplaying games. The ones that usually require an obnoxiously large book, pencils, paper and funny-looking dice. We recount our personal roleplaying histories before looking ahead to other systems and settings we want to try. If any fellow role players are out there with suggestions, we’d love to hear them! Along with sundry other geek news listed after the jump!

  • Tying up loose ends with listener comments from last week’s sex talk
  • Billy gives a spoiler-free review of Dragon Age II
  • Some highlights of the latest tabletop RPG our group has picked up – The Dresden Files (which will be featured soon on the roleplaying podcast Fandible)
  • More trouble for the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark
  • Casting rumors for the highly anticipated Hunger Games movie make it look like the cast is being whitewashed

And then the big topic: character building. We discuss the dreaded Mary Sue/Gary Stu trope and theorize what are the best ways to avoid creating a character like that. Includes discussion of our favorite villains and heroes as well as our philosophies on creating fun RPG characters.
