It’s Rear Window with a supernatural twist in this updated version, written by Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mad Men). The film stars Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and David Tennant. Directed by Craig Gillespie (Lars and The Real Girl), Fright Night opens later this Summer in 3D as well as 2D. I’m not sure why I didn’t post this when it came out last week (probably laziness), but man, this thing rocked my socks off. Between this, THOR (which looks like fun), X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (which looks amazing), and GREEN LANTERN (which now looks EPIC!!), this summer is going to be an overdose of spectacular comic book films.

Isn’t it a great morning to wake up and see footage from the new Green Lantern movie? I was a little disheartened when I learned that I would have to wait until Thor’s release in May to get a new trailer. Well wait no further. I’ve seen the 4 minutes and it is awesome! After much speculation the role of Superman’s love interest and co-worker Lois Lane has been cast! Amy Adams who has appeared in The Figher, Enchanted, and much more has won the role! The film will be directed by Zack Snyder and is set for a December 2012 release. Does she have what it takes to play our Lois? Could this be the best Lois yet? Discuss!

We’ve all been speculating for a while that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would play a role in the The Dark Knight Rises. First, he was rumored to take over as The Joker, then it seemed everybody was tapping him for The Riddler, and today it was confirmed that he will indeed be playing Alberto Falcone. This character plays an extremely crucial role in the the Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale mini series Batman: The Long Halloween. If you want to know more about the character, this is the book you should check out.

In addition to Levitt, Juno Temple (Year One) has been cast in Dark Knight Rises as a “Street smart Gotham girl”. I have no idea where to begin on speculation for this role. any ideas?

When I first heard that Academy Award nominated director Darren Aronofsky would be directing the new Wolverine movie (now titled “The Wolverine”) I was both excited and puzzled at the same time. I didn’t understand why his next film would be a follow up to a movie that critically, was not very successful. Did he have a take on the character that no one had expressed yet? Was he a fan of the failed samurai stories? I guess we’ll never know because as of this morning Aronofsky has left the project. In a press statement he said:

“As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, who have been totally supportive throughout my work on the movie, it became clear that the production ofThe Wolverine would keep me out of the country for almost a year. I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won’t be able to see the project through, asit is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again.”

Stumbling through the local comics news today I discovered an abundance of sketches by Skottie Young and Scott Morse. These drawings are translations of memorable Harry Potter characters and scenes from the movies and books. Skottie Young has gained recent fame from his beautifully and creatively illustrated The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and Scott Morse has done many graphic novels for Oni Press. These designs seem to blend and take bits and pieces from the movies, but also have their own style. Could these open the door for a Harry Potter comic?

Thor lands in theaters May 6, 2011.

Shane Black will be reuniting with his Kiss Kiss Bang Bang star as he takes over the Iron Man franchise from previous director Jon Favreau. Favreau left the Marvel Studios franchise to focus on new projects (namely Disney’s Magic Kingdom which he is set to direct).

Whether Black, best known as a screenwriter, will write a draft of the screenplay to Iron Man 3 is still being worked out at this point, but it should be a given that he will have something to do with the final draft.

John and I discussed this possibility on GeekiN #144 last week, and we both expressed how this may very well be the best thing to ever happen to Iron Man. It could even lead to the best entry in the franchise.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

From director Matthew Vaughn, X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

The story begins June 3, 2011.

Variety is reporting that actress Cobie Smulders, best known as Robin Scherbatsky on How I Met Your Mother, has been cast as Maria Hill in The Avengers. A few years back, Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon had stated that the actress was his top choice for the role of Diana Prince in his Wonder Woman film that was ultimately never produced.

In the comics, Maria Hill became the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. when Nick Fury went MIA after the events of Secret War.

In Joss Whedon’s film, Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill will be an assistant of sorts to Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.

The Avengers will assemble in theaters May 4, 2012.

Captain America: The First Avenger heads into battle (and into theaters) on July 22, 2011.

It was announced a few hours ago that Warner Bros and Zack Snyder have cast the new Superman. A press release was sent out this morning announcing that Henry Cavill (The Tudors, Stardust) will be playing Clark Kent in the new film.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Henry Cavill has won the coveted role of Superman, the iconic superhero.

The film will be directed by Zack Snyder, who stated, “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Cavill recently wrapped production on “The Cold Light of Day” and stars in the upcoming “Immortals,” opening this fall.

Targeted for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Anne Hathaway will be playing Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, the jewel thief with the hots for Batman. No word on whether she’ll be more woman than cat this time around… but here’s hoping (I’m looking at you Burton…).

Tom Hardy will be playing Bane, the ‘roid-raging foe most known for breaking Batman’s back in the Knightfall storyline. Also, he probably won’t be a lame Poison Ivy lackey… so there’s that (I’m looking at you Schumacher…).

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.” Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. “The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

I didn’t think I would really need to show anymore trailers or anything from Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (since we’ve really been pimping it pretty hard here at Geekshow), but I was wrong. This trailer is so phenomenal I couldn’t help but share it with you. It really gives you a good feel for the world of Scott Pilgrim (outside of just the fights, which are amazing) and prepares you a little better for just what you’ll all be getting yourselves into this August.

Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures have released the first official still from the 2011’s THOR. I’m not the biggest fan of the character, but that costume is dead on. It’s almost enough to get me excited… almost.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the film follows the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and is forced to live among humans. A beautiful young scientist, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), has a profound effect on Thor, as she ultimately becomes his first love. It’s while here on Earth that Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

THOR is due out next year May 6, 2011.

UPDATE: It was just reported that Marvel Studios is in final negotiations with Joss Whedon to helm The Avengers. Which means he’s essentially seconds from signing on.

Wow. I honestly didn’t think this was going to happen. I’m much more excited than I thought I’d be. What do you guys think?

Originally reported by IESB and then later confirmed by LA Times, Joss Whedon is Marvel Studios’ favorite pick for the director of The Avengers. Is this a geek dream come true? The only thing better (for me) would be a Whedon directed X-Men First Class, or if he got the reins of Marvel’s Runaways adaptation (which I guess he could even still do after The Avengers wrapped).

But it is important to note that the film will not be WRITTEN by Whedon, he would strictly be calling the shots behind the camera and nothing more. He’s only done this three times before to my recollection (two episodes of The Office and his upcoming episode of Glee), and never for a film. This would be an interesting experiment at the very least.

Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy, American Dad) will be making his directorial debut with Ted, a $65 million hard-R live action and CGI hybrid comedy, for Universal Pictures. The film centers on a seemingly normal man who, as a child, made a wish that he could talk to his bear, only to have his bear come alive. The bear grows up alongside the man and their relationship isn’t really questioned until the man’s girlfriend poses an ultimatum: her or the bear.

MacFarlane would voice the bear as well as play some sort of co-starring role (not the lead), while Family Guy’s  Mila Kunis is set to play the girlfriend character. No word on who would be playing the main character.

Seems like it could be pretty funny. I like the high concept quite a bit. Definitely fits MacFarlane’s s sensibilities. What do you guys think?

The Other Guys

Dinner For Schmucks

Dinner for Schmucks tells the story of Tim (Paul Rudd), a guy on the verge of having it all. The only thing standing between him and total career success is finding the perfect guest to bring to his boss’ annual Dinner for Extraordinary People, an event where the winner of the evening brings the most eccentric character as his guest. Enter Barry (Steve Carell), a guy with a passion for dressing mice up in tiny outfits to recreate great works of art. From Jay Roach, director of Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers comes an unforgettable feast about two unlikely friends and one very memorable dinner.

Paper Man

A coming-of-middle-age comedy that chronicles the unlikely friendship between failed author Richard Dunne and a Long Island teen who teaches him a thing or two about growing up, all under the disapproving eye of his long-suffering wife and his imaginary Superhero friend.

The Kids Are All Right

The Kids Are All Right is the heartfelt new comedy from acclaimed director Lisa Cholodenko, starring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. Two teenaged children (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson) get the notion to seek out their biological father and introduce him into the family life that their two mothers (Bening and Moore) have built for them. Once the donor (Ruffalo) is found, the household will never be the same, as family ties are defined, re—defined, and re—re—defined.

Variety confirms that director Wes Craven has signed on to direct Scream 4, from a script by original series scribe Kevin Williamson. The film will go into production this spring with original cast members Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette. It is set for release on April 12th 2011.

The sequel will take place in the original film’s setting of Woodsboro, ten years after the events of 2000’s Scream 3. Williams describes it as an “ensemble” which will introduce several new characters. Scream 4 will reference modern horror films, covering topics such as Asian remakes, PG-13 horror, vampires, Shyamalan-ian twists, and even torture porn. It is said to be the first film of a new trilogy masterminded by Williamson.

The fact that Wes Craven signed on gives me a ton of hope for this film. I love the original and enjoy the sequels to varying degrees, so if they can make a film even half as fun without retreading on the same story and themes, I’m 100% on board. Scream 4 is officially one of my most anticipated films of 2011.

If I had to guess? Sidney is now either a psychiatrist or a teacher (for easy connection to the new teenaged “ensemble”), Deputy Dewey is now SHERIFF Dewey, and Gale Weathers is a mystery novelist or true crime author of moderate fame. I do hope that the serial killer in this one drops the ghostface motiff and does something a little  different. I think that mask should be retired with the previous trilogy. Let this one stand on its own merit.

THR is reporting the offer, and I have mixed feelings about it. Is Evans the right choice for Steve Rogers, arguably the most important role in Marvel’s Avengers movie plan? I mean, at least he has charisma (which is more than I can say for that cardboard standee some refer to as Channing Tatum), and he’ll definitely be able to hold his own among the likes of Robert Downey Jr and Edward Norton, but is it the right kind of charisma? Steve Rogers needs to have that old soul out of time leader-y vibe, and while I’ve heard that Evans has proven that he isn’t always Fantastic Four’s Johnny Storm, can he really play Captain America?

But at the same time, he was probably the best choice of what was left (and since Marc Blucas never got an audition…). Plus, I’m just happy a decision has finally been made.

UPDATE: Chris Evans has accepted the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America in a nine picture deal with Marvel Studios. He is officially wielding the shield.

This leaves me with only one question: Who should play Cap’s teenage sidekick, Bucky Barnes? If he doesn’t get Spider-Man, I’d say Anton Yelchin.

Neil Patrick Harris was recently interviewed by MTV and dropped some info on the sequel to 2008’s internet sensation Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. According to the star of the Joss Whedon masterminded webseries, the sequel (which was announced last year) could be a full length feature film to be released in theaters, rather than online.

Because it will be released to a wider audience, its been said that the film will somehow not rely on the original webseries. But what does that mean exactly? While you would just assume that the film would continue with Doctor Horrible’s recent induction into the Evil League of Evil, without making much of a reference to Penny or the story of the original; its been widely speculated that they may actually remake the webseries as either the first act of the film (via Evil Dead 2) or bulletpoints within flashback sequences (which I would prefer).

The question of budget is also raised. NPH stated that giving Doctor Horrible a studio backed $80 million budget would kind of defeat the purpose of the whole thing, so would it be independently financed by Whedon? I think a self-financed theatrical sequel could be a perfect fit with Paramount’s new microbudget program.
