HBO Greenlights “A Song of Ice and Fire” Pilot

Several places are reporting that HBO has (finally) given the “A Song of Ice and Fire” television pilot a greenlight. HBO had picked up the option to make the series a long while back. But there were talks that the series was facing competition for a try at a slot. However, the series will now get a pilot episode, with the chance of a full season pickup. The first season of the show will be based on the first novel, “A Game of Thrones“. Following that, every season is planned to take on one novel. Should the series hold onto author George R.R. Martin’s projections, and not get any larger or smaller (The series is famous for growing from three planned novels into four current novels, with three more on the way. George also swears that if he dies, the series will not go on), this would give HBO a potential 7 season series.

Personally, I’ve always cheered for the series to make it. It makes a very intricate story, which would be be played out visually. A movie would cut out far too much, so television would be the best way to go. The series is quite violent at times, with a healthy dose of sexual material, and political intrigue. So really, HBO is the best that the series can hope for. George tells the fans on his “Not a Blog” that the script for the pilot is “very faithful”.

Michael Crichton Dead at 66

Author Michael Crichton, author of Jurassic Park, The Lost world, and several other science fiction novels passed away at the age of 66. His family calls the death ‘unexpected’. They also say that the author was waging a private battle with cancer. Another talented science fiction writer leaves us suddenly. R.I.P., Michael.

Black20: Best of net_work

You’ve heard me say a lot of good things about Black20 in the past, most noteably about the webseries net_work, which stars Two Geek’s own “Goram Mike”, Mike O’Gorman, and his partner-in-crime Michael Torpey.

Well, big changes are in store for Black20, and net_work may be headed for bigger things.

The following video is a sort of “greatest hits” promotional reel that the Black20 crew have created to showcase net_work, as they try to get the series on TV.

Check it out (and pay extra attention to the stylish t-shirt being worn by Mike at 1:51):

In A World… Without Don LaFontaine (1940-2008)

Don LaFontaine died yesterday afternoon and movie trailers will never be the same again.

Famous for being  “The Voice”, Don breathed baritone life into over 5000 movie trailers in his 40 year career as a voice over artist. LaFontaine became identified with the phrase “in a world…”, which has been used to open movie trailers so frequently that it became a cliché.

Good Luck Randy!

Hey Guys, Scott here. I just wanted to take the time to let you all in on something that’s happened recently.

Saturday night, while at work, Randy had a seizure that caused him to be rushed to the emergency room. After receiving an MRI, his doctors informed him that he has a  tumor in the left  frontal area of his brain. From what they can tell, the tumor is a couple of months old and it did not spread from anywhere else, which is good. They also believe it to be benign, which is great, but they’re not taking any chances.

Friday, Randy will be going into surgery to have the tumor rumoved. Fortunately, it seems to be in a spot that does not effect a lot of vital parts of the brain. The big two things in this area are behavior and emotions.

It’s also important to note that Randy is taking all of this in stride and seems to be in the best of spirits. He’s not letting this situation affect him in the slightest. After telling me the news(via IM no less: “Randy: I had a seizure at work on Saturday. Turns out I have a brain tumor.”), we went on chatting about the usual site and geek-related stuff we always discuss.

So I just wanted to take this time to wish Randy all the luck in the world with his surgery Friday, and give you all the chance to do the same. I’ve been a part of this site for a long time now, and I’ve gotten to know Randy personally, but before all that I was just a fan like any of you. If this had happened back then, I know that I would have wanted to know so I could wish him the best in what I’m sure is going to be an arduous experience.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Randy, and from one geek to another:

Attack of the Show – Black20 Segment

Sometime TGMP guest host Mike O’Gorman’s site Black20 got a mention on G4’s Attack of the Show. I’m really happy for these guys and the success they’re having, they deserve every bit of it. The segment, Kings of Dot Comedy, chronicles both the site’s humble origin as well as giving some info on the web series they have. If you haven’t checked out Black20 yet, you don’t know what you’re missing. Check out the AOTS clip here:
