Fable II, Fallout 3, and Batman: Arkham Asylum – Oh My!
Tuesday, November 25th, 2008
Lots of big news on the DLC front this week. Well, if you are on the 360 and PC, it’s pretty big news, that is. Unfortunately, as mentioned when Fallout 3 was announced originally, it’s DLC will not be seeing release on the PS3. However, PC and 360 fans will be seeing new content for the already large world of Fallout 3. In addition, PC gamers will also be getting an official game editing kit for download. The first of the DLC for the game hits in Janurary, followed by more in February and March. The kit will be released next month. Keep reading for more details on the Fallout 3 content, the Fable II DLC, and the new Batman: Arkham Asylum trailer!
Included in the Fallout 3 content, is the following:
- Operation: Anchorage. Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed battle scheduled for release in January.
- The Pitt. Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh. Choose your side. Scheduled for release in February.
- Broken Steel. Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March.
Also, new content was announced for Fable II as well. Obviously, being an Xbox 360 exclusive game, this will also be limited to the Xbox 360. There will be two DLC packs released in mid-december. One of them will be free, but beyond news that you will need to download the DLC in order to continue playing co-op with someone that has the paid DLC, not much else was announced. The other DLC will run 800 microsoft points ($10 USD), is titled “Knothole Island” and will include to following content:
- Embark on 3 unique quests set in 3 unique dungeons.
- Unravel the mystical secrets of the resurrection shrine.
- Try on a whole new range of outfits and look like an armoured knight, an assassin, a barbarian or a leather-clad biker, among many others.
- Brandish 6 new weapons.
- Dozens of unique potions that will drastically alter your appearance.
- Customise your weapons the way you want with the new augment tool and a whole new array of augments.
- +50 additional leaderboards.
Is the content worth the additional cost? Will it add a significant chunk of time to the already arguably long experiences? Will gamers shy away from DLC announced a mere month after the game is released? There are still many questions left unanswered. Hopefully in time, they will find promising answers. But in the meantime, I’ll use this space for an excuse to post the nice looking but slightly unfulfilling new trailer for Batman: Arkham Asylum:

Book of the Month
Y The Last Man Vol. 5In this final Deluxe Edition hardcover collecting Y #49-60, Yorick and Agent 355 prepare for their ultimate quest to reunite the last man with his lost love, while the person, people or thing behind the disaster that wiped out half of humanity is revealed. Then, Yorick Brown's long journey through an Earth populated only by women comes to its dramatic, unexpected conclusion.
I enjoyed the Fable 2 experience quite a bit. However, each city in the main game only added an hour or two of extra content. So I’m not sure if the DLC for the game will be worth it in that regard. The extra equipment and such may be cool, though equipment in the game is kind of watered down as it is. I did hear about a weight loss potion. That’s good, considering how easy it is to have a fat hero in the game. And since you have to eat celery to lose weight, it can be quite difficult to do so.
The Fallout 3 content? Well, I don’t have it yet (Here’s hoping for Christmas!) but I do like what I’ve seen from the game. Bethesda is the king of having lots of content in their games. With me not getting the game before Christmas at the earliest, the DLC will be right around the corner by that point. So if I end up enjoying it (Wanted to love Oblivion, but unfortunately I did not), I should have a lot of opportunities to keep the game going. Plus, Shivering Isles was an expansion for Oblivion that most people I’ve talked to say was actually better than the main storyline. So we’ll see.
As for the Batman Trailer…it looks really good. But I was disappointed to not get at least a money shot for this teaser. The Joker’s laugh doesn’t cut it.
It looks like they’ve finished a lot of the environmental stuff for Arkham Asylum. I bet they don’t really have a whole lot else to show right now, especially if they want it to look good. I’m sure they’ve got sort of character models, but probably nothing they feel comfortable showing the public.
I don’t have Fable 2 or Fallout 3. I really want to try out Fable 2 to see if I like it any better than the first game. Maybe my friend will let me borrow it.
On a side note, I’ve started messing more with the 360’s Arcade games. I downloaded a bunch of trials this weekend. I ended up liking Age of Booty so much that I bought it, and I’ve been playing it since then. For some reason, I find the game to be extremely addicting. So far I’ve only played against the computer, but it would be nice to see what playing with other humans is like. I also bought Prince of Persia Classic, and I plan on getting Banjo Kazooie as soon as they let all of us non-preorder people buy it.
The ability to mod games on the PC is one of the reasons I got Fallout 3 on the PC instead of the 360. So I am excited to see the official Mod Tool come out next month.
Mods for games like this I ultimately could care less about. The only games where I ever care about mods are FPS games. And even then, I only really care about the map editing and new game mode editing. Not so much the changing of skins, textures, etc to make it a completely different game.
Ah, I missed your post, Polygon. Yeah, I figure that Batman isn’t done yet. But I think they are further along than just the environments, otherwise it may be another year before we see the game. As far as Fable 2 goes, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I didn’t like the first one. But I didn’t like the first one, because it felt far too closed off. This one isn’t perfect or anywhere close. But if you get a play through that doesn’t involve one of the game-ending bugs that are present, I think it can be very enjoyable.
Age of Booty is freaking awesome. I wish I had more time to play it. I also really like A Kingdom for Kieflings, though I do have some problems with it (The seasonal changes are too disorienting, and the music gets tedious after about an hour or less). Age of Booty, BTW, is a much better game when playing against humans. They badly need to change the AI to where you can encourage your partner to do something. Some of the later levels in the game are borderline impossible. You can’t take on the tasks you need to do by yourself, so you go to try and top out your upgrades. Only to have your teammate rush into situation after situation that gets him killed. And of course every time he does that, the computer grabs one of your resources. So it makes it almost impossible to level up faster than the enemies.
Banjo Kazooie was held back a week (Dec 3rd), because the game ended up having some bad bugs that kept you from being able to complete the game. But it was a lot of fun from what I played of it. I’m just glad I got it for free. I’m not the type of person to spend $15 on a Nintendo 64 game, unless I already know it’s a favorite of mine. For example, I’d probably buy Battletoads or A Link to the Past for $15, but not many games beyond that.
Yeah, I have A Link to the Past on my Wii, and it was just as fun as I remembered it. I’ve also got Super Mario World, Mario 2, Mario 3, Super Metroid, and Kirby’s Adventure. It’s fun playing those old games every once in a while.
I played the demo for Kingdom of Keflings (mostly because it uses the avatars), and I liked it well enough. I almost bought it, but then I started playing Age of Booty and changed my mind. I’ll probably pick it up sometime in the future.
Oh! I forgot to say that we should start up a game of Age of Booty sometime. Perhaps I’ll suggest it the next time I see you on Live.
I’ve been playing the heck out of Fable 2. While the main story may be short, if you play the side quests, and work some of the jobs, then you can extend the experience quite a bit. I really recommend picking it up and checking it out…..well worth it.
